A very Happy New Year from Proseptic – the team are looking forward to what this year has in store for the world of sewage treatment!

Whatever the new year brings, it’s important that you aren’t bogged down with any pesky sewage treatment issues – if your septic tank is looking a little neglected or suffering in the winter weather, it might be time to invest in a new one.

We’ll explain everything you need to know about a septic tank replacement, so you can decide whether to make your new year’s resolution getting your sewage treatment sorted.

Why Should I Replace My Septic Tank?

When your septic tank is worn down, or if it encounters any serious issues, it may be necessary to replace your old septic tank with a new one.

It is also important to replace your septic tank to remain compliant with laws and regulations surrounding effluent discharge – the General Binding Rules cover the rules for septic tanks and other sewage treatment plants, and the latest update was in 2023.

Septic tanks which discharge directly into surface water are now illegal, which means that many older septic tanks were upgraded to sewage treatment plants to comply with the new rules.

However, septic tanks which utilise a drainage field or soakaway to discharge their waste water may not have received such upgrades yet.

Before you consider replacing your septic tank, you should always check who is responsible for your sewage treatment.

What Replaces My Septic Tank?

There are two types of septic tank replacements we can offer: septic tank retrofits and sewage treatment plants.

Septic tank retrofits are conversion units which upgrade your current system to keep it compliant with regulations – they can extend the life of your septic tank whilst ensuring your effluent is clean enough to be discharged safely into the environment.

Small Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are larger sewage treatment solutions which thoroughly purify wastewater, releasing a much cleaner discharge than most septic systems.

STPs are seen as the preferred option when it comes to replacing your septic tank, as their eco-friendly drainage process can match the increasing ecological standards of local councils and keep your sewage treatment compliant.

Why Does Compliant Sewage Treatment Matter?

Whether you have a commercial or domestic sewage treatment system, the aim of a septic tank replacement is to maintain a high-standard of sewage treatment which processes effluent to a safer quality.

If your sewage treatment system isn’t compliant, it increases the risk that untreated effluent could be discharged into the environment, causing damage to wildlife and buildings, as well as potentially polluting nearby drinking water supplies.

For this reason, there are strict regulations around sewage discharges, with large fines and even prosecution imposed by the Environment Agency for non-compliance.

How We Choose The Best Solution For You
